National Geographic Science of Steroids

This video posted on youtube shows the science of steriods and how they create muscle rapidly, and also the dangers of steroid use. Includes a look at some famous deaths thought to be brought on by steroid use.

Some facts from the video

Lyle Alzado won a championship in Super Bowl XVIII as a player with the Los Angeles Raiders blamed steroids for his battle with brain cancer that eventually took his life at the age of 43.

Steve Michalik won a number of body building titles including the 1971 AAU Mr. USA, the Mr. America in 1972 and the NABBA Mr. Universe in 1975 as well as 22 other titles including the 1971 AAU Mr. Apollo and the Most Muscular Man in the USA. Michalik claimed he used steroids for ten years. His use first began in preparation for the 1975 Mr. Universe competition.

According to Michalik, he suffered many serious health problems due to his steroid use. It started with him passing blood in his urine; a sign of the multiple liver tumors doctors later discovered. After recovering from these bouts with cancer Michalik suffered a heart attack, followed by a stroke. Since then, he was against the use of steroids. Although not mentioned in the video, Michalik died on May 24, 2012. He was 63.

Common issues with steroids in men are breast swelling, shrinking of testicles, and bad acne.

In women, often there is a permanent deepening of their voice, male pattern baldness, facial area, and shrinking of the breasts.

The Incredible Hulk Lou Ferrigno Lou Ferrigno portrayed the Incredible Hulk on television every week in the late 1970s, and TV movies in the 1980s. He's a big inspiration to me as he crosses the lines between two of my favorite hobbies, weightlifting and comic books. He started weight lifting at age 13. His role model was body builder and Hercules star Steve Reeves. He's won IFBB Mr. America, IFBB Mr. Universe, came second and third in the Mr. Olympia competition, and second in the Masters Olympia. His favorite superheroes as a child were Spider-man and the Hulk of course.
