Does Sugar Hurt Your Brain?

Just got through reading this article at yahoo news that means more bad news for lovers of sugar. Apparently, a new study from US scientists showed how a steady diet of high-fructose corn syrup could sap the memories of lab rats.

Researchers at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) fed two groups of rats a solution containing high-fructose corn syrup. That's the stuff we've warned you about on this site that some believe is even worse than regular sugar due to the extra fructose which is the bad unhealthy part of sugar. The study showed in the rat tests that eating too much fructose could interfere with insulin's ability to regulate how cells use and store sugar, which is necessary for processing thoughts and emotions. The rats couldn't remember how to navigate their mazes.

The article went on to say that the average American consumes more than 40 pounds (18 kilograms) of high-fructose corn syrup per year, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

They also found that eating a high-fructose diet over the long term alters your brain's ability to learn and remember information. But adding omega-3 fatty acids to your meals can help minimize the damage.

So the next time somebody cuts you off in traffic don't ask if they are on drugs. Ask if they are on sugar.
