Corn Sugar

According to ABC News High Fructose Corn Syrup makers are trying to dodge all the bad publicity they've been getting on their product. A plan is underway to change the name to "Corn Sugar". The Corn Refiners Association applied Tuesday to the federal government for permission to use the name on food labels.  Consumption of high fructose corn syrup has been falling since belief that the sugar is less healthy than regular sugar which it indeed is as it contains more fructose than regular sugar.

From wiki  "When fructose reaches the liver," says Dr. William J. Whelan, a biochemist at the University of Miami School of Medicine, "the liver goes bananas and stops everything else to metabolize the fructose." Eating fructose instead of glucose results in lower circulating insulin and leptin levels, and higher of ghrelin levels after the meal. Since leptin and insulin decrease appetite and ghrelin increases appetite, some researchers suspect that eating large amounts of fructose increases the likelihood of weight gain. more on fructose

Back to the news on the name change, two new commercials trying hard to push corn sugar, shows people who say they now understand that "whether it's corn sugar or cane sugar, your body can't tell the difference. Sugar is sugar." Of course that's not the case, but it's a good marketing ploy. Again, high fructose corn syrup has more fructose than regular sugar. Fructose leads to insulin resistance. Fructose converts to fat more than any other sugar. Fructose is thought to fail in signaling the body it's full, causing over eating.

The average American ate 35.7 pounds of high fructose corn syrup last year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That's down 21 percent from 45.4 pounds 10 years before. So the message is getting out. Americans are starting to figure out that this stuff is part of the reason obesity is at an all time high in America. It is hardly a coincidence that the introduction and rise of high fructose corn syrup in our food supply and rise obesity coincide together. Don't get me wrong you can't lose weight guzzling regular sugar either, but always remember, anytime man processes an food item, it is 9 times out of 10 going to be less healthy. Natural is the way to go.

Since HFCS is cheaper we the consumer have been subjected to it in practically everything we eat.  We'd be better off with less sugar period to keep back the costs.

Bottom line here is now you know when you read the label that if "corn sugar" is listed in the ingredients, it is code for high fructose corn syrup, and  you won't be tricked. I wouldn't be surprised if they come up with a few other code names to get by in the next few months.
