Rocky Movies For Health and Fitness Inspiration
Everyone is motivated by different ideas, concepts, and events in our
life. The trick to getting on track to a healthy fit lifestyle is
finding those things that motivate you, and then mapping out goals for
Growing up in the 70's and 80's I watched one series of movies
in particular over and over again. That was the Rocky movies starring
Sylvester Stallone. Back then Stallone was considered the ideal athlete
for the 1980ís. Even today, a few decades later, Stallone is still in
great shape and still cranking out action movies. One of the things I
find so motivational about the movies was the spirit of Rocky Balboa
that Stallone portrayed, which was one of never ending determination. Of
course, a few times Rocky gets into the dumps like we all do until his
wife Adrian gives him a few words of encouragement then its back to
training like no man has trained before with Rockyís super motivational
theme in the background.
Once in the ring Rocky would fight wars never giving in, even when faced
with a much bigger, stronger, and more powerful challenger. Growing up a
little on the smaller side, I found that very encouraging. In fact the
idea that a man can work hard enough he can take on any challenge is
something I think Americans need more than ever these days. Itís part of
the American spirit to never quit and always keep going forward not
matter what the odds are against you. American loves a winner, but loves
an underdog turned winner even more.
If Rocky got knocked down, he would just get up again and again till he
The principle of never giving up is Biblical principle as well, in the
Bible in Proverbs 24:16 tells us.
16 For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again : but the
wicked shall fall into mischief.
Today Americans are losing their will to fight. Obesity is taking
over, and people would rather sit all day than pick up a weight or even
go walk around the park. The nice thing about the Rocky movies is the
spirit shown that says fight and keep on fighting. Donít give up. As
Rocky is quoted as saying, ďIt ainít over till itís overĒ. Wouldnít it
be nice to see people getting off the couches and heading out the parks
to play some kind of sports, just any kind?
One of the biggest drawbacks of gaining weight especially in men is the
loss of testosterone. The more weight you gain the more you lose, and
testosterone is what drives men to compete among many other things.
Testosterone helps men and even women stay healthy and lose weight. Yes,
even women have some testosterone though just not as much as men. Thatís
why women have a harder time building muscle and losing weight than men.
The junk food today has just drained men and women of the will to do
anything. If itís not the sugar itís the chemicals, antibiotics, fat,
and everything else they can cram into our food that messes with our
weight and our testosterone levels making girls go through puberty
faster and giving men attributes more like women. The chemical additives
in our foods today then make it harder and harder for women or men to
On top of that, society hasnít exactly been progressing toward a more
competitive edge. More and more it seems like winning is considered mean
spirited. In a man if you take away the chance for success that is to
win, you take away the whole reason to get involved in the first place.
We are made to compete, but these days competition even in business is
getting a bum rap.
What can you do? Well besides cutting out processed foods, you should
aim to eat as many organic foods as possible, and get out and exercise
whether you want to or not, as long as you are physically able of
course. Itís time we stop babying ourselves and get up off the couch.
Rocky never would have won a fight if he waited for government
assistance. He sure never would have won if he ate junk food all day,
and he most definitely would have never won a fight if he sat on the
couch feeling sorry for himself.
Somebody reading this is going to say thatís just a movie. Then look at
any boxer or other athlete. Do you think winning comes easy. Just as
Rocky says in the movie it takes heart. It takes strong will and
determination sometimes just to take that first step, but I guarantee
that the more you get out and do things the better you will feel.
One thing or another is going to happen if you keep trying and
failing. You are either going to get real mad and quit, or get real mad
and keep going harder than you did before. You never lose as long as you
keep playing. The second you quit for good then itís over, but like the
Bible says, the righteous falls and gets up again and again.
For those of us that work out all the time, but we may be tempted to
give up because we donít quite see the results we want. Donít quit. Just
get mad and work harder. Think smarter about how you approach your
workouts and what foods you eat. Itís all about experimenting. Don't
forget to take into account the proper rest and recuperation without
which it's impossible to gain ground. Think smart along with working
hard when it comes to your health and fitness regime.
If you hit a roadblock with your fitness goals, start from scratch.
Write down everything you eat. Is there anything that should go? Are you
getting enough rest, or enough sunshine during the week to keep your
vitamin D levels up. Maybe you need to start upping the intensity of
your workouts, or just changing them around to shock your body. If you
keep working on it youíll figure it out.
One of the best scenes from any of the Rocky movies came on the last
in 2006. Rockyís son tries to discourage him from fighting from fear of
looking bad for Rocky and himself, but Rocky has a different take on it.
Quote from Rocky to his son, ďLet me tell you something you already
know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and
nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your
knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody
is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's
about how hard you can get it and keep moving forward. How much you can
take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done! Now if you
know what you're worth then go out and get what you're worth. But ya
gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you
ain't where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do
that and that ain't you!Ē
The pretty much sums of life you either take what life throws at you and
keep going, or you quit, but for all those thinking about giving up, you
have to ask what are you giving up to? I mean what kind of place does
giving up leave you? Once you give up whether itís fitness or something
else what you really are giving up when you quit trying is hope. As long
as you keep putting forth the effort you always have that hope of
getting to where you want to be in life. Moving forward is the only way
to not only achieve goals, but the only way to keep your hope and
I think after watching Rocky III for the millionth time this scene must
have really stuck in my mind. Rocky is feeling really down and his
training was off, and in response to Apollo Creed ,who trains him in
this one, about what the matter was, Rocky just wants to put off
training till tomorrow. Apollo says back angrily, ďThere is no
tomorrow!Ē In a sense when it comes to getting fit there really isnít a
tomorrow. Too many people post pone eating healthy and exercising till
itís too late. Do it before you get sick.
Yes, movies can be a lot of wasted time, but there are some lessons
to be learned with the classics.
Anybody remember Yodaís famous quote from the Star Wars films, ďDo or do
not, there is no tryĒ? Of course I donít think no matter how hard you
try are you going to move things around with your mind like Yoda, but
the principle is very sound when applied to things within the realm of
the physically possible. When you really want to shape your body up and
go to the next level. You got to take every workout like itís your last
and only chance to make a difference. Either you are going to do it, or
you ainít, to put it in laymanís terms. Work out like you mean it! Any
workout is better than nothing, but strive to move forward. When you go
to lift weights or run that mile in record time make a new goal to
achieve and then say to yourself Iím going to do it, but be honest with
yourself. Do it, or donít, but donít expect to break plateaus with an
attitude like it doesnít matter if I succeed or not. Breaking through to
the next level takes determination born from necessity.
If this were a Rocky movie Iíd say you have to be hungry. You have to
have the "eye of the tiger" in a workout. Achieving goals makes workouts
more fun. Really putting yourself into a workout not only makes you get
better results, but it makes working out a whole lot more interesting.
So set goals in the areas you want to work on the most. Do you want
bigger arms then set a goal of lifting more in curls. Do you want to be
more ripped, then set a goal of sprinting faster for a 100 yards. Make
your athletic goals fit your physical goals. For those just starting
out, have fun and you will work out without boredom and wind up hooked
on exercise instead of chocolate chip cookies.
