Phosphorous salts or phosphates are found in bones, teeth, and in all body cells as part of a buffer system. It's also part of DNA and RNA and is therefore necessary for all growth. It also assists in energy metabolism. Many enzymes and the B vitamins become active only when a phosphate group is attached. Some proteins, such as the casein in milk contain phosphorous as part of their structures.

Phosphorous Deficiency

Phosphorous is commonly found in almost all foods so deficiencies are not likely.

Recommended amounts
Adults need 700 mg/day.

Children need 500 to 1250 mg/day.
