Manganese Facts

 Books on Manganese

The body only contains 20 milligrams of manganese. Most is found in the bones and organs like the liver, kidneys, and pancreas. Manganese acts with enzymes that facilitate the metabolism of carbohydrate, lipids, and amino acids. Managanese-containing metalloenzymes assist in bone formation.

Requirements for manganese are so low and are found in many plant foods that deficiencies are rare. High intakes of iron and calcium limit manganese absorption.

Toxicity is most likely to occur from a person's environment. Miners who inhale large quantities over a prolonged period show symptoms of brain disease along with abnormalities in appearance and behavior.

Grain products are where most manganese is found in our diets.
