The Plant Parodox is written by Steven R. Gundry a renowned cardiologist and heart surgeon who decided to try and work on healing his patients before they made it to the point of needing surgery. To this end he came to the conclusion that food was key to healing or preventing the heart disease of his patients. He takes it beyond just avoiding excess sugar and watching out against processed foods. He believes that foods with lectin are a major source of inflammation and gut issues. His thought process is that most diseases that inflict humans start in the gut. He believes if you can heal the gut, you can greatly improve a person's health and well-being.
From the backcover of his book, he says that lectins are found not only in grains like wheat but also in the “gluten-free” foods most of us commonly regard as healthy, including many fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, and conventional dairy products. These proteins, which are found in the seeds, grains, skins, rinds, and leaves of plants, are designed by nature to protect plants from predators (including humans). Once ingested, they incite a kind of chemical warfare in our bodies, causing inflammatory reactions that can lead to weight gain and serious health conditions.
Dr. Gundry has successfully treated tens of thousands of patients suffering from autoimmune disorders, diabetes, leaky gut syndrome, heart disease, and neurodegenerative diseases with a protocol that detoxes the cells, repairs the gut, and nourishes the body. Now, in The Plant Paradox, he shares this clinically proven program with readers around the world.
Doctor Grundy has done a number of interviews on youtube, below is one where he discusses his health strategy.
I find it interesting that Dr. Gundry recommends avoiding nightshades such as tomatoes which is one of the diet rules that Tom Brady lives by. Recently, Tom Brady, now 40 years old, claims that he has no inflammation while training for NFL football. He also stays away from dairy which is another group that Dr. Gundry warns against. Brady shies away from fruit and Dr. Gundry recommends eating fruits sparingly only when they are in season.
