The Bible and Your Health

It's probably no secret to those who have studied the Bible very long that the Word of God strongly correlates obedience to Godís commandments and longer life together.

Here are just a couple of verses that state that obedience to God equals a longer life.

Proverbs 10:27
The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened .

Deuteronomy 30:20
That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.

What I did in my book Common Sense Biblical Approach to Health and Fitness was to ask whether or not there was any scientific evidence to suggest that obeying God's commandments could indeed lengthen a person's life, or give a person better health in life. The answer I believe is yes.

Not that God needs backing up, but I thought it was important to note that even when there isn't necessarily a direct promise of longer life related to a particular commandment of God, there tends to be a very good common sense and or scientific reason to suggest that obeying that particular commandment would have a direct impact on a person's health and well being.

In the book I take a look at Proverbs 17:22 that reads:

A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

Think of it, thousands of years before scientific studies were ever performed, God's Word makes the bold claim that a merry heart is like medicine, and what do you know, but that studies have shown that that laughter does the heart good, by expanding the linings of blood vessels and boosting blood flow.

In one study presented to the American Heart Association researchers found that people with heart disease were 40 percent less likely to laugh in various situations when compared to people of the same age who did not have heart disease.

Anger is another common sin warned against many times in the Bible that is easily backed up by science as being harmful to one's health.

Colossians 3:8
But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

Ephesians 4:31
Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:

An eight-year study of 670 men aged 45 to 86 showed that anger and hostility can speed up the rate at which lung power declines with age.

Anger, hostility and stress have previously been associated with heart disease, asthma and other illnesses. The emotions may change biological processes, disturbing the immune system and causing chronic inflammation according to the Doctor Mercola site.

Other health issues associated with anger.

Headaches
Problems with digestion
Insomnia
Increased anxiety
Depression
High blood pressure
Skin problems, such as eczema
Heart attack
Stroke

Something else God warns us against is worry.

Matthew 6:34
34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

I found this very interesting from Doctor Mercola's site - "Most people fail to realize that you typically will manifest whatever you focus your attention on. If you are constantly worrying you will tend to have a self-fulfilling prophecy and experience the target of your concern through the very process of worrying about it."

Here's what WebMD says worry causes -

difficulty swallowing
dizziness
dry mouth
fast heartbeat
fatigue
headaches
inability to concentrate
irritability
muscle aches
muscle tension
nausea
nervous energy
rapid breathing
shortness of breath
sweating
trembling and twitching
suppression of the immune system
digestive disorders
muscle tension
short-term memory loss
premature coronary artery disease
heart attack

These things are all part of stress that worry causes. It seems that the biggest benefit from following the commandments of God in the Bible is avoiding stress. Anger, worry, hate, bitterness, and lack of forgiveness all lead to stress, and all of these are warned against in the Bible. Realizing that God gives his commandments based on his love, we can easily see how obedience is in our own benefit, and not just a bunch of rules to follow.
