If you believe you can't lose weight, you can't!

The mind is a powerful tool. It's a million times more powerful than most of us give it credit for. One only has to think of the placebo effect to recognize that if your mind believes something enough, it will affect you physically.

In the last few years, there have been pushes for fat acceptance. Everybody is so PC and seemingly concerned with how people feel. On the surface this seems like it's just being kind to others, and I get the logic. Nobody should be made to feel inferior, but at the same time it appears these days, in almost every category, more attention is placed on feeling good about a problem than actually solving the problem.

Acceptance is for something that can't be changed. Once you accept something emotionally and mentally then that becomes your reality. Positive change happens when you recognize a problem and act to solve that problem.  It can be hard, in fact at first, it probably will be hard, but when you need to lose weight for health reasons, accepting your current weight is not an option. Logic has to take front seat. Many times excuses are for people that don't want to have to work at making changes. It's so much easier to just coast through life.

In the PC realm people are afraid to make statements like "being overweight is bad for your health" because then you might have more anorexia cases or depressed overweight people. We have to teach people to use common sense. There is no perfect size or shape. It is true that perfection is in the eye of the beholder, but common sense says that if you are so fat that you can't enjoy the same kind of activities other people in your age group are participating in, then you have a need that should be addressed.

So, here's my point. In order to fix a problem or change a circumstance in life, you have to first recognize that there is a problem. This might cause feelings of depression at first. It might make you sad to have come to grips with this need to change course in life. We all would rather coast in life, but that's not facing life head on. Sometimes, life is hard, sometimes, life demands that we make changes in order to survive. We as a society are too soft, not just physically, but mentally. Now we have college kids that need safe zones because certain words or ideas might offend them, and by the way, these are the same bunch of kids that can rattle off the "F" word in every other sentence.

How to use your mind to lose weight

How do you use your mind to lose weight? Here's how.  First, you recognize whether or not you have a legitimate problem. Ask yourself what your goal is for your life physically. Ask how much you want to weigh, what kind of body you want to have, etc. Make sure those goals are reasonable and healthy from a logical stand point, not an emotional one.

Write down your goals. It's like making a contract with yourself. Make a reasonable time table for reaching those goals. Make small goals that lead to the ultimate goal, that way, you reward yourself sooner as you push toward the main prize.

Plan your shopping trips. You are what you eat. Plan out a starting workout schedule you can handle, and make obtainable goals every month on how far you walk, run, how much you lift, etc. Start slow and build. It all depends on you, of course, on where you are physically.

See, what we are doing here? We mentally become aware of a problem then the mind starts making plans on how to make those changes.  The mind and the body have to work together in unison.

Now here's the thing that we need to get back to, none of these plans are worth anything to the person who starts out by saying, "There is no use," or says, "it doesn't matter at all if I lose weight because I'm happy where I'm at". That's tricky of course, because I'm not suggesting you be miserable and down on yourself because you're less than someone else that's thinner or healthier. That's not the point at all. The point is to look at yourself from a standpoint of logic and reason and not emotion. As far as what others think, don't worry about that. This is about you and your goals. It doesn't matter what other people think, most of them are out of shape anyway. In fact, that's another problem, for the first time in generations there is actually peer pressure to be fat and out of shape. People tend to hate it when others are more successful than they are.

It's crazy, but then you might find yourself staying out of shape and eating sugary garbage every week because Aunt Zelda might be offended that you don't eat all her baked brownies every week at her house. Aunt Zelda is as big as a house, by the way, and always complains that you are looking too thin. So what's it going to be, please Aunt Zelda or yourself. In life you'll experience a million different opinions, and a million different critiques of you. People make judgments of us every day. You'll go insane if you don't forget about what other people think and focus on what is the best for you personally, not based on emotions, but based on logic and reason. Being overweight will shorten your life, cause you painful inflammation, and rob you of many fun activities others enjoy. Think about what you want to get out of life. Don't sell yourself short.

Your body is like a machine or a house. You can build it, or let it rot. You are what you put into it on a daily basis. Tell yourself that you can't win, and you can't. That's a fact. Look, imagine any goal you can imagine and then tell yourself it's impossible. What happens? Nothing happens, you just concluded that there is no way to succeed at that goal, so why continue forward. See, the moment you say this or that is impossible, or I'm this or I'm that, that's the moment that you just created who you are, that is unless you change your mind later on.

Maybe, we are limited up to a point by our genetics, but if you are a Ford Pinto, then be a Pinto with mag wheels and a oversized V-8. I've heard they have stuck them in there before. Just don't hit them in the rear or boom!

I was reading the other day in one of my old muscle magazines about a power lifter named Al Caslow, who is a 165 pounder that squat 886 lbs at that time. Think about that for a second. The general impression most people have is that in order to lift incredible amounts of weight, you have to look like the Incredible Hulk and weigh a massive amount of weight yourself. So how does a guy lift what guys twice his size would fail to lift. I tell you it's not because he told himself he was happy with lifting a 200 lb squat. It's sure not because he told himself he would never be able to squat 886 lbs. You don't succeed at anything that you've told yourself is impossible. Many, many times we define what is possible or impossible for ourselves and we cut ourselves short.

A lot of times it's the programming we had as a child that holds us down, but the thing to do is recognize what our programming is and reprogram ourselves to success. I'm talking to myself as much as anybody else right now. Don't let anybody else define what your capable of doing, and for sure as heck don't limit yourself.  What your capable of may be beyond anything you've ever dreamed of before. You just have to start by dreaming it and then act on those dreams. Attitude is everything.
