Grocery List - A Powerful Tool for Weight Loss

Research shows that making a grocery list can help you lose weight. By the simple act of planning in advance as to what you are going to buy, you can avoid spending quite as much time browsing, which leads to getting sucked into buying junk foods.

 

Making a grocery list is a part of the mental preparation I recommend in  my new book, Never Quit.  Benjamin Franklin said it best, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail”. When you decide to make a change in your lifestyle to a healthier one, or seriously want to lose weight and keep it off, preparation and the proper mindset are essential. You have to first make up your mind that you aren't going to buy temptation and put it into your shopping cart. Having a grocery list goes a long way to keeping you disciplined and on the right track.

When putting together your list, think of healthy foods you love and then consider some you may have never tried before and add them to the list.

 In my book Never Quit I have included a huge list of healthy foods, and their health benefits, that you can add to your list to help get you started.

Not only will making a list save you from junk food impulse buying, it will save you time browsing the store aimlessly. Depending on what you put on the list, it could even save you a little bit of money.

When you put your first list together, put a lot of thought into each item you pick as to whether or not that particular food is going to help you reach your health or fitness goals. Make the list based on logic. Taste is important, but more than that, always remember what the primary goal of food is. Food is fuel and only food dense in nutrients is going to supply your body's fuel requirements. Junk food makes you fat and leaves you needing more nutrients. Think of it this way, you need nutrients for every part and function of the body whether it's for hair, skin, muscles, eyes, ears, brain, etc. Processed foods will do more to add volume to your belly than to satisfy the body's basic functions.

Grocery lists can help you lose weight, but only if you put the right kinds of foods on that list. I'm a firm believer in not counting calories, and like to focus more on the types of foods that I eat. I'm aware of how much I eat in a day, but it's not my main focus of attention. By choosing ahead of time what I'm going to have in my fridge, I don't have to worry about those times when I'm super hungry because I know that the majority of the food in my house is going to be healthy.

Here's a quick list of a few examples, which is also included in Never Quit, to give you some some ideas to help you get your grocery list rolling.

1. Kale
2. Chicken breast
3. Spinach
4. Mushrooms
5. Bell peppers
6. Broccoli
7. Brussels sprouts
8. Eggs
9. Cauliflower
10. Celery
11. Garlic
12. Onions
13. Nuts
14. Avocado *Keep it to one a day.
15. Apple *One a day
16. Low fat plain organic yogurt goes good with fruit and nuts
17. Blueberries
