The Vitamin D BattleDespite calls by some experts that Americans take in much more
vitamin D, a new report from the Institute of Medicine finds that most
people are getting enough of the nutrient each day. For many people, 600 international units (IUs) of vitamin D or more
each day will maintain bone health, but those aged 71 and older may need
as much as 800 IUs daily, the IOM experts say. That's up from 1997
recommendations, which advised 400 IUs per day for people aged 51 to 70
and 600 IUs per day for those over 70. From Hip2bfit webmaster: The question now is who do you believe about Vitamin D? Doctor Mercola just released a new article below on his thoughts along with a video interview with Dr. John Cannell below. Not being a doctor just a student of nutrition, all I can say is a person should research all health matters for themselves. Talk to their doctors, and ask themselves what are they at risk for when considering supplementation. As a general rule we are better off when we get our nutrients through our food, but the as you know vitamin D comes primarily from the sun as well as in some foods, only in much lower levels. So in the winter time it's very possible to become vitamin D deficient. If you are worried about being deficient you can get a blood test from your doctor. Now here's the article and video from Doctor Mercola to get his view point on the vitamin D controversy. From the Doctor Mercola site - Why the New Vitamin D Recommendations Spell Disaster For Your Health
On November 30, 2010, the
Institute of Medicine's Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) released
their updated recommendations for vitamin D (and calcium), which
has sent shockwaves of disappointment through natural health
community.
According to the FNB, the new recommended daily allowance (RDA) for pregnant women and adults up to 70 years of age is the same as that for infants and children – a measly 600 IU's. This despite the overwhelming evidence showing that vitamin D is extremely important for a wide variety of health conditions besides bone health, and that most people need about ten times this amount or more. In this interview, Dr. Cannell, founder of the Vitamin D Council, and Carole Baggerly, founder of GrassrootsHealth, share their concerns about this recent development.
