1949 Cigarette Ad,  "More Doctors Smoke Camels Than Any Other Cigarette"

This is from a 1949 TV commercial. We sure have learned a lot since then. Do you believe the gall, promoting cigarettes as something a doctor would do or recommend. Well I hope they didn't know any better back then, but there is certainly no excuse for a doctor to smoke today, much less do a commercial promoting cigarette smoking. It would be funny if it wasn't so serious.

On April 1, 1970 President Richard Nixon signed the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act into law, banning cigarette advertisements on television in the United States starting on January 2, 1971.

According to wikipedia Tobacco is the single greatest cause of preventable death in the United States and worldwide. Tobacco use leads most commonly to diseases affecting the heart and lungs, with smoking being a major risk factor for heart attacks, strokes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, and cancer (particularly lung cancer, cancers of the larynx and mouth, and pancreatic cancer). It also causes peripheral vascular disease and hypertension, all developed due to the exposure time and the level of dosage of tobacco. Furthermore, the earlier and the higher level of tar content in the tobacco filled cigarettes causes the greater risk of these diseases.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that tobacco caused 5.4 million deaths in 2004 and 100 million deaths over the course of the 20th century.

Tobacco use is a significant factor in miscarriages among pregnant smokers, it contributes to a number of other threats to the health of the fetus such as premature births and low birth weight and increases by 1.4 to 3 times the chance for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Healthy Blood Pressure
In North America 1 in 5 adults have hypertension. After age 65 the number increases to 1 in every 2 with only half of these cases being treated. In blood pressure there are two numbers. The higher number is the systolic blood pressure which is the pressure in the arteries when the heart muscle is contracting and pumping blood into the arteries. The optimum level is around 120 mm or less. The second number is called diastolic blood pressure which comes in at 80 mm or less. High numbers indicate strong possibilities of disease.
